The Office of the Passion

How to pray the Office

This is not meant to be a burden, but a joy, if you cannot stop - just say an Our Father in your heart.

We have conformed the pattern of our father Francis’ prayer to the layout of the Liturgy of the Hours as it is is recited today following the pattern of the early Church with its hours of:- Lauds - Morning Prayer, Terce - Midmorning, Sext - Midday, None - Afternoon, Vespers - Evening Prayer, Compline - Bedtime and Matins, Night vigil.

The Psalmist tells us he prays seven times a day, bringing each hour of existence, into the presence of God - and the Office of the Passion is short enough for you to pick it up and read it in a few moments; when you get up, at coffee break, lunchtime, afternoon tea, in the evening and before going to bed; with an option of saying Matins before you sleep or in the course of the night!

Our brothers and sisters who have shared these prayers as working people, usually prefer to get up a bit earlier while the rest of the family are asleep, make an oasis after lunch and gather themselves at the end of the day.

In Francis’ heart, the Passion of Christ is not a restricted selection of events starting after Gethsemane and ending on Calvary, it is the whole of the earthly life of Jesus from his incarnation to his ascension into heaven.

The office is in five sections
I For weekdays Throughout the Year, and all Lent (including the Sunday of Lent & Holy Week)
II For Sundays and First Class Feasts Throughout the Year
III For Advent
IV For Christmastide from the eve of the Nativity (Vespers of the 24th December) to the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord.
VI For Eastertide (from Lauds of Easter Sunday to Compline of Pentecost Sunday)

These are suggestions. Francis had no thought to make the Office of the Passion a burdensome ritual obligation but a space for love and praise of the Lord - which can be even more beautiful when shared with others!

Each hour begins with the same antiphon: Holy Virgin Mary, and concludes with the same versicle: Let us praise the Lord our God

The Antiphon

Holy Virgin Mary,
Of all women on earth
there is none like you;
you are the daughter and handmaid
of the most high King and Father of Heaven;
you are the Mother
of our most holy Lord Jesus Christ;
you are the Bride of the Spirit.
Pray for us,
with St Michael the Archangel
and all the powers of heaven
and all the saints,
to your most holy beloved Son,
our Lord and Master.

Psalms

Morning prayer

Have mercy on me, God have mercy,
For in you my soul has taken refuge.
In the shadows of your wings I take refuge
Till the storms of destruction pass by

I call to my most high, holy Father,
To God, who has always been my help.
May he send from heaven and save me
And shame those who assail me.

He snatched me from my powerful foe
From my enemies whose strength I could not match.

They laid a snare for my steps,
My soul was bowed down.
They dug a pit in my path
But fell in it themselves.

My heart is ready,  O God,
My heart is ready;
I will sing, I will sing your praise.
Awake, my soul,
Awake, lyre and harp,
I will awake the dawn.

I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,
Praise you among the nations.
For your love reaches to the heavens
And your truth is in the skies.

O God, arise above the heavens;
May your glory shine on earth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen

Terce

Have mercy on me, men crush me;
They fight me all day long and oppress me.
My foes crush me all day long,
For many fight proudly against me.

My enemies whisper together against me;
They all weigh up the evil which is on me.
Those who watch me take counsel together,
They come to visit me and speak empty words.

All who see me deride me,
They curl their lips, they toss their heads.
But I am a worm and no man,
The butt of men laughing stock of the people.

In the face of all my foes
I am a reproach,
An object of scorn to my neighbours
And of fear to my friends.

Holy Father do not leave me alone;
My strength, make haste tohelp me.
Make haste and come to my help,
O lord, my God, my Saviour.

Give praise to the Father Almighty,
To his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord,
To the Spirit who dwells in our hearts,
Both now and forever. Amen

Sext

With all my voice I cry to the Lord,
With all my voice I entreat the Lord.
I pour out my troubles before him;
I tell him all my distress,
While my spirit faints within me,
But you, O Lord, know my path.

On the way where I shall walk
They have hidden a snare to entrap me.
Look on my right hand and see:
There is no one who takes my part,
I have no means of escape,
Not one who cares for my soul.

It is for you that I suffer taunts,
That shame covers my face,
That I have become a stranger to my brethren,
An alien to my own mother’s children.
I burn with zeal for your house, holy Father,
And taunts against you fall on me.

Now that I am in trouble they gather,
They gather and mock me:
They take me by surprise and strike me
And tear me to pieces.

More numerous than the hairs on my head
Are those who hate me without cause.
Those who attack me with lies
Are too much for my strength.
How can I restore what I have never stolen?

Lying witnesses arise
And accuse me unjustly.
They repay me evil for good:
My soul is forlorn.
They repay me evil for good
And attack me for seeking what is right.

You are my most holy Father
My king and my God.
Make haste and come to my help,
O Lord, my God, my Saviour.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

O all you who pass this way, look and see.
Is there any sorrow like the sorrow I bear?

Many dogs have surrounded me,
A band of the wicked beset me.
These people stare at me and gloat:
They divide my clothing among them,
They cast lost for my robe.
They tear holes in my hands and my feet;
I can count every one of my bones.

Against me they open wide their jaws,
Like lions rending and roaring.
Like water I am poured out,
Disjointed are all my bones.

For food they gave me poison:
In my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink;
They have laid me in the dust of death.
For they persecute the pne whom you struck;
They increase the pain of him whom you wounded.

I lie down to rest and I sleep;
I wake, for my most holy Father
Has raised me in glory.

Holy Father, you will guide me by your counsel
And so you will lead me to glory.
What else have I in heaven but you?
Apart from you I want nothing on earth.

“Be still and know that I am God,
Supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth”.

The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants
With his most precious blood.
Those who hide in him shall not be condemned.
With justice he will rule the world;
He will judge the people with his truth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen

All peoples clap your hands;
Cry to God with shouts of joy!
For the Lord, the most high, we must fear,
Great King over all the earth.

Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad,
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise.
Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
All the trees of the wood shout for joy.

O, sing to the Lord a new song,
Sing to the Lord all the earth.
The Lord is great and worthy of all praise, to be feared above all Gods.

Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
Give the Lord the glory of his name.
Prepare your hearts and take up his holy cross,
Live by his commandments to the last.

O earth, tremble before him;
Proclaim to the nations:” God is King”,
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
Now and forever. Amen

Compline

You have kept an account of my wanderings;
You have kept a record of my tears;
Are they not all written in your book?

My enemies whisper together against me,
Those who watch me take counsel together.
They repaid me evil for good,
Hatred for my love.
In return for my love they accuse me,
While I pray for them.

My holy Father,
King of heaven and earth
Do not leave me alone in my distress;
Come close, there is none else to help.
Then my foes will be put to flight
On the day that I call to you.

My friends avoid me like a leper,
Those closest to me stand afar off.

You have taken away my friends
And made me hateful in their sight.
Imprisoned, I cannot escape;
Holy Father, be not far from me.

O God, make haste to come to my help,
O lord my God, my Saviour.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen

Matins

Lord my God I call for help by day,
I cry at night before you.
Let my prayer come into your presence,
O turn your ear to my cry.
Come close to my soul and redeem me;
Ransom me pressed by my foes.

Yes, it was you who took me from my mother’s womb,
Entrusted me to my mother’s breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
From my mothers womb you have been my God.
Do not leave me alone in my distress;
Come, close, there is none else to help.

You know how they taunt and deride me;
My oppressors are always before you.
Taunts have broken my heart;
I have reached the end of my strength.
I looked in vain for compassion,
For consolers; not one could I find.

The proud have risen against me;
Ruthless men seek my life.
To you they pay no heed.
I am reckoned as one in the tomb;
I have reached the end of my strength,
Like one alone among the dead.

You are my Most Holy Father;
My king and my God.
Make haste and come to my help,
O Lord, my God, my Saviour,
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever. Amen

The Psalm

At all the Hours

Ring out to God our Strength.
Shout in triumph to the true and living God
with a loud voice.

For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear,
great King over all the earth.
Our Most Holy Father of heaven,
our King before time was,
sent his beloved Son from on high
and he was born of the blessed and holy Virgin Mary.

He will say to me: "You are my Father",
and I will make him my first-born,
the highest of the kings of the earth.

By day the Lord will send
his loving kindness.
by night I will sing to Him,
praise the God of my life.
This day was made by the Lord
we rejoice and are glad.

To our race, this most holy and well-beloved son is given:
for our sakes, a child is born at the wayside
and laid in a manger,
because there was no room at the inn.

Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to men of good will.
Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad;
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise.
Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy.

Sing a new song to the Lord,
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
The Lord is great and worthy of all praise,
high above all gods.

Give to the Lord you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and power,
give to the Lord the glory of his name,
Prepare your hearts and take up his cross;
live by his holy commandments to the end.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,

And is seated at the right hand of the most holy Father in heaven.
O God be raised above the heavens,
May your glory shine on earth.
The Lord comes !
He comes to judge justly!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen

Compline

O God, make haste to my rescue,
Lord, come to my aid!
Let there be shame and confusion
On those who seek my life.

O let them turn back in confusion,
Who delight in my harm,
Let them retreat, covered with shame,
Who jeer at my lot.

Let there be rejoicing and gladness
For all who seek you.
Let them say forever, “ God is great”,
Who love your saving help.

As for me, wretched and poor,
Come to me, O God.
You are my rescuer, my help,
O lord do not delay.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen
